Protogami: Plastic Engineering & Design at Your Fingertips
Injection plastic molding techniques continue to provide us endless possibilities in the product development world. From prototype to mass production, plastics are being used at every stage of development. Kevin Crystal of Proto Labs Inc. engineered a compact injection mold design aid for development called the Protogami.
The Protogami is a hexa-kaleidocycle design and engineer aid that consists of six linked tetrahedral pyramids. Each pyramid displays a particular plastic resin in four different finishes (i.e. high polish, 600 grit stone, no polish, medium bead blast).
6 popular types of plastic resin used today:
ABS
Acetal
Polycarbonate (PC)
Thermoplastic elastomer (TPE)
Glass-filled nylon (PA-GF)
High-density polyethylene (HDPE)
The Protogami is just one of many tools that can help students, designers and engineers visualize the difference between different finishes on a variety of plastics for their projects.
